Tomb Sweeping day- 2-4th April

At the start of the year the Chinese authorities decided that Tomb sweeping day would be a national holiday- so this year all staff get the second to the fourth of April as a national holiday!!

A graveyard on Tomb Sweeping day- a holiday to all interns in China

Tomb Sweeping day (Qingming Festival) started in the Zhou dynasty (1046-256 BC) and is used now for remembering the past in true Confucius style.

This is one of the many benefits of an intern ship with ODM based in China- the national holidays!

Dragon Lobster Yu Sheng

Following my previous post on Yu Sheng, I will introduce you something special and creative from my little red dot Country. This Chinese New Year, also known as the year of the Dragon, we have seen several interesting ideas coming from Restaurants offering different set menus.

Dragon Lobster Yu Sheng!
This was a special dish that needs to be ordered from Feng Shui Inn in Singapore! We see the chefs going into detail with the carrots and raddish, positioning all ingredients in the shape of a Dragon. Something new that I came across this Chinese New Year. This will be a easy job for most restaurant next year as it will be the year of the Snake!

Now we all know that not only China has cool ideas. Why not check out our ODM blog for cool promos such as the Octopus Suction Coolie

Happy Chinese New Year - Gong Xi Fa Cai

ODM wishes everyone at Intern Asia a Happy Dragon Year Ahead!

Whilst collecting red packets and visiting families are a must this festive season, let me introduce you 1 dish that is commonly served. It is called the Yu Sheng, also known as Raw Fish. It may be eaten on any convenient day during Chinese New Year as a symbol of prosperity and good health amongst the Chinese. Find out more about it here

Back in Singapore, the dish consist of fish served with white radish, carrots, red pepper, turnips, red pickled ginger, sun-dried oranges, chilli, jellyfish, chopped peanuts, toasted sesame seeds, Chinese shrimp crackers, five spice powder and other ingredients. All diners at the table then stand up and on cue, proceed to toss the shredded ingredients into the air with chopsticks while saying various "auspicious wishes" out loud. It is believed that the height of the toss reflects the height of the diner's growth in fortunes, thus diners are expected to toss enthusiastically.

A pretty fun practice that messes up the table!

Furniture Warehouse- Xia Wan Pi Fa Shi Chang

This week, to equip our every expanding Zhuhai office, me and another intern ventured out to Xia Wan to the furniture warehouse:

Xia Wan Furniture Emporium
I quickly came to the conclusion walking round Xia Wan that this is where all of the landlords by their crappy domestic appliances for half the price. In a 5 minute walk around the outer corners of the wholesale mall you can see everything from mattresses stacked 20 high to air conditioners to deep fat fryers.

Every avenue you walk down takes you down a new street full of goods that can't have hit the floor of the factory before they were shipped in here:

A landlord's wet dream- second hand furniture city
This is definitely the place to go when you need to kit out a new apartment in Zhuhai. As always- I suggest you go with a Chinese friend to stop you from getting ripped off massively by the locals!
